What does a fractional communications director cost?
The short answer
There's no standard rate card, but the closest published benchmarks put part-time outside communications help at about $2,000 to $10,000 a month. A full-time public relations manager earns a median $146,910 a year, which comes to roughly $17,500 a month once you add benefits.
The numbers
Published prices for fractional communications leaders are thin. Most firms quote after a call. These are the closest public benchmarks I found, with sources at the bottom of the page.
| Option | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Solo publicist | $2,000 to $10,000 a month | Everything-PR, 2026 |
| Boutique PR firm, 5 to 20 people | $3,500 to $10,000 a month | Everything-PR, 2026 |
| Mid-sized PR firm, 25 to 150 people | $10,000 to $25,000 a month | Everything-PR, 2026 |
| Full-time PR manager, salary | $146,910 a year median, about $12,240 a month | BLS, May 2025 |
| Full-time PR manager, salary plus benefits | About $210,000 a year, about $17,500 a month | My math: the BLS median, with benefits at 30.0% of compensation (BLS, June 2026) |
| Catalyst19 Fractional Communications Chief | $5,000 a month, no setup fee | This site |
Two caveats. The agency and publicist ranges are estimates from a PR trade site, and they mostly price media coverage. The benefits math applies the private-industry average to one job, so treat it as a ballpark.
What moves the price
- How you pay. Some charge by the hour. Others, like me, charge a flat monthly fee for a defined scope of work.
- Scope. Writing to your own people, handling reporters, getting ready for a crisis and managing an agency are different jobs. Each one you add raises the price.
- Team. Managing staff or vendors takes more hours than writing does.
- Seniority. Someone who has handled reporters on a bad day costs more than a junior writer.
What to ask before you sign
- What gets written each week, and by whom?
- Who on my side approves it before it goes out?
- Do you use AI, and will you tell me when you do?
- How often do we meet?
- Who owns what you write?
- How does either of us end it, and on how much notice?
Fractional, agency or full time?
An agency usually brings a team built to get you coverage. A full-time director brings one person in the building every day. A fractional chief brings senior judgment and steady writing for part of the week. If you're torn between the last two, here's how to choose between full time and fractional.
Where Catalyst19 fits
My Fractional Communications Chief is $5,000 a month with no setup fee. You get your words every week in your voice (the staff note, the posts, the Monday read for your crews), the statement when something breaks and one standing hour with me every two weeks. A named person on your team approves everything before it goes out. It's a 90-day first term, then month to month on 30 days' notice.
It fits a leader with more people than voice. It's the wrong fit if you need a media campaign or someone in your building every day, and I'll tell you that on the call.
Book 20 minutesQuick answers
How much does a fractional communications director cost per month?
The closest published benchmarks put part-time communications help at about $2,000 to $10,000 a month, depending on scope and seniority. Mine is $5,000 a month.
How much does a full-time communications director cost?
The median salary for public relations managers was $146,910 in May 2025, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Add benefits at the private-industry average of 30% of compensation and it comes to roughly $210,000 a year.
Is a fractional communications director cheaper than a PR agency?
It can be. A boutique PR firm runs about $3,500 to $10,000 a month for a team's time. A fractional chief is one senior person, usually at a flat fee, focused on your words.
Do fractional communications directors charge hourly or monthly?
Both. A flat monthly fee is easier to budget. Whichever you pick, get the scope in writing.
What should a fractional communications contract include?
What gets written each week, who approves it, how often you meet, who owns the work, whether AI is used and disclosed, and how either side ends it.
